New balancing machine for a wide range of machines

As a result of the machine park extension, BENNING has expanded its balancing technology with balancing of rotors up to 50 tonnes now possible.

Whether car tyres, crankshaft or aircraft turbines, every rigid body that rotates around a fixed axis requires balancing from time to time; otherwise, an imbalance can occur that can lead to vibration, increased wear or – at high speeds – even destruction.

A subsidiary of global-technology conglomerate DÜRR AG, SCHENCK RoTec GmbH specialises in custom balancing and quality diagnostic systems for industries and business sectors ranging from automotive to mechanical engineering and from the turbomachinery industry to aerospace. Balancing is an important step for the quality of rotating and oscillating components, and simultaneously contributes to increase their service life.

Optimisation of technology

Wanting to expand and optimise the balancing technology of its repair work in Bocholt, in March 2016 BENNING decided to work with SCHENCK RoTec GmbH.
With SCHENCK a world leader in balancing and diagnostics technology, and representing the Non Plus Ultra in this area – and not forgetting the crucial role played by the balancing machine previously provided by SCHENCK – it was an easy decision.
With the current cooperation agreement
running for a minimum term of five years, BENNING hopes that this successful collaboration will long continue.

High mechanical load capacity up to 50 tons

In 2011, BENNING invested in machinery at Bocholt to enable the repair of large machines weighing up to 120 tons. And in November 2016, they upgraded balancing technology equipment, which increased the manageable maximum weight of rotors from 10 to 50 tonnes ensuring greater flexibility in their daily work.

This was made possible by the newly commissioned SCHENCK horizontal balancing machine, type HM70U. It provides safe high-speed and accurate balancing for a wide range of motors, allowing cylindrical rotors with integral shaft journals, as well as disc-shaped rotors with auxiliary shafts, to be processed. Typical rotors include electric armatures, rollers, turbines, spindles, turbo charger, crankshafts, ventilators, pump impellers, drive elements, tool holders and gears.
The maximum rotor diameter of the new wheel balancer is 3,600 mm (over the bed), the bearing clearance is a maximum 8,000 mm and, with a drive power of 160 kW, transmission speeds of up to 4,400 revolutions per minute can be achieved.

Insensitive to shocks

Thanks to its very narrow but stable pedestals, the machine guarantees a high overall rigidity and linearity with very low damping action. This is where the proven SCHENCK force-measuring principle comes into play.
It means that the middle part of the bearing pedestal (designed as a strong dynamometer) and the transducer are outside the force path, which is why they are resistant to impact – a principle that allows quick change­over times.
Even after commissioning, the balancer HM70U using various plug-ins (e.g. for mass correction) can be extended at any time and easily adapted to new performance requirements (“pay as you grow”).

Fast and safe working

An important part of type HM70U is the CAB 920 SmartTouch software that is delivered with the machine and currently the latest version offered by the SCHENCK company. With this, the proven measurement technology remains unchanged and of the highest quality. CAB 920 combines high measurement precision with simple operation, conditions that allow fast and safe work for
BENNING with every conceivable technical rotor type.
Any changes in standards and guidelines that make a system update necessary can be implemented quickly and easily. Likewise, at the Bocholt repair work plant, BENNING can test technical improvements in hardware and software in advance, which will be placed on the market by SCHENCK. Offering the highest precision and quality, BENNING can ensure maximum customer satisfaction as they benefit from the most up-to-date technology.
