BENNING’s protected power supply system supports North Sea wind farm
The DanTysk wind farm is located off the island of Sylt, in the North Sea and consists of 80 wind turbines, covering a total area of 70 square kilometres. The facility has been designed to convert North Sea wind into enough environmentally friendly electricity to supply up to 400,000 households and is being supported by BENNING and its range of power protection systems.
As an advanced power production facility, the DanTysk wind farm is expected to produce a significant amount of renewable energy. However, regardless of the facility’s production potential, safeguards are still required to ensure safety and monitoring are not impacted in the case of a lack of wind or if the public grid developed an unforeseen fault. In these scenarios, the operation requires a secure power supply to manage its own requirements as all of the system’s key functions must operate without interruption – up to the point of transfer to the public grid. For example, the wind turbines’ aviation obstruction markers and control, as well as monitoring of the substations, are critical systems that cannot risk a loss of power and require rectifiers with battery backup, and in some applications, inverter systems and DC/DC converters or UPS systems to power all emergency systems and functions.
